1970年4月26日，《建立世界知識產權組織公約》正式生效，世界知識產權組織這一致力于保護知識產權的政府間國際組織正式成立。2000年10月，世界知識產權組織決定，從2001年起將每年的4月26日定為“世界知識產權日”，旨在世界范圍內樹立尊重知識、崇尚科學和保護知識產權的意識，營造鼓勵知識創新和保護知識產權的法律環境。
2013年世界知識產權日來臨之際，世界知識產權組織總干事弗朗西斯·高銳在致辭中指出：“我要對下一代說的就是：不斷創造，不斷創新。同時還要不斷思考，在未來對創造和創新的社會管理中，知識產權應當如何完成其使命”。
每年的“世界知識產權日”都有一個主題：2012年的主題是“天才創新家”。世界知識產權日來臨之際，世界知識產權組織總干事弗朗西斯·高銳在致辭中指出，我們的發展離不開創新，沒有創新，作為人類，我們就將原地踏步。
