Dear xx,

Pursuing a masters degree is a responsibility I owe to myself as well as acommitment I have to others. I refer to it as a responsibility because I have aproactive outlook on life, which makes me actively seek and go after the thingsthat I want to accomplish in life. I refer to it as a commitment because I wantto be an example to others of the attainments and contribution to society thatwomen can make.

My first introduction to human resource management came as a result of anencounter with Victor Banjo, General Manager Human Resources Oceanic Bank Plc.It was as a result of this encounter that I was able to get detailedunderstanding of the roles played by human resource in tackling human issues andconsequently in organizational success.

In light of this, I have decided to take up the masters program in HumanResource Management because I am interested in the role it plays in achievingorganizations goals and objectives, key among them being hiring and training thebest employees, and dealing with performance issues.

I am a graduate of Mass Communications from Bowen University. My MassCommunications degree has provided me with a strong foundation as well asfortified me with good communications skills, personal communications as well asorganizational communications skills, bearing in mind that the importance ofproper communication in the business environment cannot be over-emphasized. Inthe same vein, professionals of communication recognize the importance of goodbusiness practices.

My career goal is to work in a leading firm that places priority onprofessionalism and lead such organization towards attainment of set goals bymaking use of knowledge garnered as well as experience. Ten years from now I seemyself as a human resource consultant, providing professional advice so thatothers can make the best decisions. I believe a masters degree in Human ResourceManagement is all I need to make this dream come true. It fits the profile ofthis goal.

Perhaps some of my greatest attributes is that I am smart, hardworking, andinquisitive. I am always willing to learn and I appreciate every opportunity tolearn new things or old ones differently. I am sensitive and genuinelyinterested in others, which makes me confident that HRM is the path I want totread. Human resources are vital to any organization: without people theorganization would not function.

I chose this university because of its great reputation, its renownedacademic excellence, and good industry links as well as flexible postgraduateschemes. I look forward to being a part of a renowned institution as yourinstitution. I firmly believe that the right education in the right school willopen doors of advancement in my chosen field of study.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear x,

Literature unites everything that I find exhilarating about life, and mostof my spare time is taken up with reading. To me, literature and the writtenword is mankinds greatest achievement, which is why I am determined to dedicatemy life to its study. I am not content with simply reading a text, as I have ahunger to learn everything I can about what I read - how it was written; why itwas written; what it means; its place in literature as a whole.

I read a catholic range of literature. I particularly enjoy Romanticpoetry, as I find it to be an intriguing example of how literature can be usedto make a stand against societys established codes, as poets rebelled againstprevious literary traditions and, contrary to the doctrines of neo-classicalliterature, focused on emotions and on the individual. Another example of such arebellion, and another area of fascination to me, is the dystopian novel of thetwentieth century. My favourite examples include Orwells 1984 and AnimalFarm, Goldings Lord of the Flies , Bradburys Fahrenheit 451 and HuxleysBrave New World. Many of these great works were inspired by, and reactedagainst, the rise of political extremists during the first half of the century. These works are also often highly satirical, a style which I admire and whichhas lead me to read works such as Popes The Rape of the Lock, HellersCatch-22 and Ben Eltons cynically satirical plays. I also appreciate thenovels of Jane Austen, especially the witty Gothic satire NorthangerAbbey.

I see literature as both a cause and an effect of history, and so I studyhistory in order to fully appreciate the context of a piece of writing. I findit fascinating how ones knowledge of a historical period can alter onesinterpretation of a text. Also, I believe that the study of art can contributeto ones understanding of literary background, for example in the way thatBlakes paintings can give an insight into his mind, and thus his poetry. I findthat my study of maths is useful as it contributes to my logical and analyticalskills, which are vital for the critical appraisal of literature.

At the end of year 12 I attended a ten-day residential course at EtonCollege to study English literature. The course was designed to be of the sameintensity, and of a similar level, to university studies. These were ten of thebest days of my life, and made me realise that an English course at universitywould be perfect for me, and that I would be perfect for it. This course alsoallowed me to refine my interests in the subject, and to look in detail at areashitherto untouched-upon in my state school education.

I have completed a work experience placement at a local architects office, which I feel taught me many life-skills. Seeing the enthusiasm of the people Iworked with showed me that it is important to pursue a career in a subject youlove. Therefore, although I do not have a definite idea of where I wish to workin the future, I would like to find employment in an area directly related toEnglish, such as in publishing or journalism.

I take part in extra-curricular activities that I feel aid me in my Englishstudies. Being a member of a debating society has increased my discussionabilities, and has taught me how to argue my point while retaining an open mindand being aware of the opinions and interpretations of others. I am a volunteerfor a group that helps less-able children to read, as I feel that the ability toappreciate the written word is the most fundamental life-skill that a child canhave. I love making music on the guitar and the piano, and I am an avid art-fan.I am part of NAGTY, Young Enterprise and the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear x,

By serving as a noncommissioned officer in theUnited StatesMarine Corps, Ilearned and developed valuable leadership skills that would prove crucial to mysuccess as a leader and to my ability to gain the respect of my subordinates. The Marine Corps places great emphasis on leadership characteristics, believingthat great leaders are not born, they are properly trained. I submitted togrueling training on my way to becoming an officer in the Marines, and believethis training gives me the foundation of strong leadership skills that I willneed in every day corporateAmerica.

Leadership in the Marine Corps is more complicated than the simplemanagement of employees. I learned this lesson the hard way, being thrust into amanagement position as my unit was being shipped over seas during the PersianGulf War. As a newly promoted Corporal, I was given the job of night crewsupervisor in charge of 15 other marines. In the Marine Corps, leaders are notonly held accountable for the work getting done but also for the performance andconduct of their marines. At the age of 21,I had the responsibility not only tocarry out my orders but also to safeguard the personal lives and protect thegeneral welfare of my men. This being my second time over seas, I understoodmany of the difficulties that a young marine can have on their first extendedtrip away from their family. I enjoyed helping my marines over come theirproblems, and learned that the benefits were well worth the time that Iinvested. I discovered that employees who have the support of their managementtend to be more focused on the tasks at hand, gaining levels of trust andloyalty that can only benefit the organization.

Related to this issue of gaining trust and loyalty through managementsupportiveness is that the Marine Corps requires creative means to motivatesubordinates. It can be very difficult at times to be in charge of individuals, yet have no direct control over their salaries or advancement in theorganization. The government decides military salaries, and promotions arecontrolled by boards with the primary means of measurement being time inservice. For this reason, I learned to manage through mutual respect. I believeit is much more important to gain the trust and confidence of your employeesthan to use direct compensation to motivate them.

Throughout my Marine Corps career and beyond I developed many strongleadership skills, but most of all I learned that to be effective as a managerone must remain focused on the human aspect of leadership. By concentrating toomuch on the goal and not on the people needed to meet it, leaders riskalienating their employees and thus failure in achieving the goal itself. Byleveraging the lessons and qualities I gained while serving as an officer in theMarine Corps, I hope to meaningfully contribute to the academic environment atthe Anderson School of Business.

  Yours sincerely,

Dear x,

As a member of the third generation after founding of the People’s Republicof China, I grew up as a witness of the rapid economic development of China as aresult of its reform and opening up policy. I consider myself more fortunatethan people of my previous generations because today China is experiencingdynamic development and facing unprecedented opportunities and challengesbrought by its accession into the WTO and deepening economic globalization.

I was aware of the importance to study economics and management in adiversified cultural environment early in my undergraduate study in businessadministration. After I started working, I felt more deeply in the urbanplanning and construction projects I undertook that the rapid development ofpublic transportation boosted material expansion and accelerated the inherentinstability in urban life. Endless segmentation has been seen in an extensiverange in rapidly emerging residential areas and community construction. This isno doubt the result of the serious lack of scientific planning in urbanexpansion in China.

As a young man of the largest developing country in the world, I’m moreoriented to observation and reflections everyday. I long for opportunities tolearn more about western societies and study in an environment that is disparatewith China in beliefs and habits because in the mirrors of differences, I willbe probably more capable of reflecting on the culture and beliefs of my ownnation.

It is because of the above reasons that I’m applying for pursuit of furtherstudies in urban and regional planning (URP) in the University of x. I hope Iwill be able to learn from the experience, ideas and methodologies of the x inthe field I’m so interested in and combine them with the actual circumstances ofChina to change the inappropriate practices and concepts in urban planning inChina. With the marriage between more internationalized cultures and Chinesetraditions, I hope I will be able to find a balance between China’s traditionalculture and the modern trend in urban planning and development. I think Ialready have a clear motif and I have also equipped myself with all thequalities required for successful study and research at your university.

I’m proud to say that I have built for myself a sound specializedtheoretical foundation through my four years of study in business administrationin x University. With an average GPA of 83 in four years, I ranked the third inall 100 students of the major. I received Scholarship for Excellent Studentsmany times and I was honored an Excellent Graduate in 2003. I was a top studentin the courses of Economics, Management, Statistics, etc. At the same time, Iread extensively after class and I studied a full set of curricula offered by xBusiness School. I had the notion that economic business is but businesscompetition-based independent practice using pure economic theories or models. But with my deepening of study, I found it is a discipline that incorporatesprofound philosophical ideas, cultural differences and a wide range of naturalsciences. This certainly echoes a well-known saying in x Business School: doingbusiness is like being a man.

Moreover, I have shown competent research ability in the two specializedacademic papers I published. In writing my graduation thesis entitled x, Iinvestigated thirty state-owned enterprises and foreign-invested enterprise andconducted 500 tests and data analysis. Based on a study on the human resourcemanagement models in x and x enterprises, I have summarized the peculiaritiesand discrepancies of Chinese enterprises through comparisons. The 25,000-wordthesis analyzed moot points including the autonomous power of talents andpsychological contract from the perspectives of strategic management, mathematical statistics and cultural operation models. The thesis received ahigh score of 95 from the assessment panel and was published in x, a corenational academic journal. My another thesis entitled x, which discussed therole of personnel tests and evaluation in human resource management in a marketeconomy system from the perspectives of the screening, promotion, training, optimal allocation of personnel and salary package design and pointed out thewrong concepts in personnel evaluation in China and proposed solutions, waspublished in a top provincial-level journal.

A theory will find its life only in practice. I accumulated more experiencein my specialized field of interest in every internship and assignment. Duringmy internship at the Bureau of Forestry of x City of x Province from June toSeptember 20xx, I collected data and produced statistics on the livestockhusbandry and aquiculture of the entire city and made a significant contributionto the 20xx-20xx five-year livestock husbandry and aquiculture planning programof x City. In my internship in the Construction Committee of x City of xProvince from February to May 20xx, I took part in the planning project for a200,000-square meter x Residential District. I was specifically responsible forstatistical calculation on compliance with national standards of noise control, compliance with national standards in mosquito and fly density and garbagebagging, classification and designated disposal, occurrence of criminal cases, etc. The residential district was honored a “National Leading ResidentialDistrict” because of its outstanding planning. During this period, I also tookpart in many other public projects and construction administration. Since mygraduation in July 20xx, I have been working as a manager of marketing in xMetal Industry Ltd Company. I successfully fulfilled my responsibility for theprocessing and selling of 400 tons of refined copper imported from x and x. Iwas also responsible for some personnel management work at the company.

Based on my large amount of observation and deepened reflections on a widevariety of issues in practice, I think that China has many wrong concepts androoms for improvement in URP, e.g. mismatch between autonomous administration ofresidential areas and government function transformation, lack of attention oncommunity construction in urban-rural connection areas and the unrestrainedexpansion and irrationality in residential space and communities in urbandevelopment planning. While China has its own peculiar circumstances comparedwith western countries because of its historic and cultural reasons, thelearning of more advanced ideas and technologies in the field of urban planningwill play an important role in solving the above problems.

The University of x has a long esteem in URP and it is known widely forits strong faculty. The URP Program is nearly-sufficient with its own planninglibrary and exclusive computer laboratory. I especially extol its efforts toconduct and disseminate research on the “theory and practice” of urban societyto plan for more equitable and sustainable communities. I’m equally interestedin areas of land use planning, land management, planning process theory, regional planning and economic development and transportation planning. Afterstudying at your university, I will return to China and make more contributionsto the prosperous development of China in first decades in the new millennium. Iconfidently believe that I will become an expert in URP and will have a muchmore successful career in this field with the amalgamation of the western andoriental cultures deep within me through studying at your university.

  Yours sincerely,
